Ohio Housing Trial Study Combats Infant Mortality
A healthy life starts with a healthy beginning. For many of our CareSource members, problems that start in childhood – or even prenatally – often expand during their adult lives. Sadly for some of the most underserved populations, it is a challenge to even survive childbirth at all. Despite having some of the most advanced medical care in the world, infant mortality rates in the United States are surprisingly high. To that end, CareSource places great emphasis in creating healthy outcomes for children.
For pregnant mothers, CareSource can now predict and respond proactively to high-risk pregnancies and then give moms the resources they need after delivery to raise a healthy child. In Ohio, we placed at-risk pregnant women in stable housing—a trial that was so successful, we hope to roll it out across the nation.
For infants, we partnered with Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis to provide baby scales for neonatal intensive care babies. The scales let mothers monitor their child’s growth at home, which is critical to ensuring an infant is thriving, instead of risking an office visit during the pandemic.
For young children and their families, we’re leveraging a partnership with Share Our Strength, a national anti-hunger organization to offer the Cooking Matters program, inspiring families to make healthy, affordable food choices.
